As I see it there are only two ways to improve your flying.
You notice what can be improved or Some one points it out to you.
DSC Coaching should be for all DSC members. We can all improve.

Coaching in the club
The new "Coaching" page on the website is definitely a work in progress, and people wanting coaching obviously need names, photos and contact details. But it's a start! Although there are a number of experienced, active and willing coaches in the club, many have been reluctant to put themselves forward, and in the past people have tended to hear about them from word of mouth and by recommendation.
The club has realised for quite a long time that this is a problem, and we need a clear process for connecting coachees with coaches - and coaches with coachees! In my view we need a simple coaching "welcome page", introducing all our club coaches to everyone (with a photo and short intro to each coach) and inviting pilots to make contact. Another part of the website (perhaps a coaches forum section) could be set up to allow coaches to discuss issues like liability, the role of coaching in the club, arrange periodic coach meetings, discuss specific issues and share tips on how to coach more effectively.
Aerodynamic theory
Some of you will know that I've often found the usual explanations for how a plane flies very unsatisfactory and sometimes downright false! The video Steve linked to challenges some of these usual explanations (including those found in the BHPA training syllabus!) so is well worth a watch if you have a technical interest in the subject. It is pitched in a rather amateur and "conspiratorial" style, but it makes some good points: It argues that "displacement" theory (applying the theories of Archimedes and Newton) better explains flight than the more usual "pressure differential" theory most of us were taught. Here's a screengrab from one of the videos:
In essence it is making the point that lift is better understood by viewing it in terms of "downwash" or "buoyancy" (like a balloon) where the amount of air displaced downward is creating lift rather than as a mere pressure differential between the upper and lower regions of the wing. I tend to agree.

(took me ages to find a "Reply" button on here...could it be added to the Actions button at the top? )
I am working through the list of club coaches, and getting their permission to put their details on the new Coaching section of the website which I requested.
I have put up an overview of what coaching is/isnt, and I have also asked for a calendar of coaching sessions which I have created to be posted which should enable any coaches to create calendar entries and any people looking for coaching to register.
